Cleanings, exams, & oral cancer screenings
The health of your teeth and mouth are very important to your well-being, and the basis of sound dental care begins with routine cleaning. Polished Dental Care customizes your cleanings based on your periodontal (gum and bone) health. Medicated gels, prescription mouth rinses, and ultrasonic scalers are sometimes used to make the cleaning procedure more comfortable and effective.
At Polished Dental Care, our team is trained in a simple screening that involves the examination of your oral cavity as a whole, not just your teeth! Beginning with a visual examination of your mouth, we also feel your mouth tissue and throat to help detect potential abnormalities. We have the skills and tools to ensure we identify early the beginning signs and symptoms of oral cancer and precancerous conditions.
Gum disease therapy
The early stage of gum disease is called gingivitis, resulting in gums that are red, swollen, and may bleed easily. Irritated gum tissue can then separate from your teeth, causing pockets for bacteria to collect. Gum disease is usually caused by the build-up of plaque, a sticky bacteria that form as a film on your teeth when not removed with thorough daily brushing and cleaning between teeth. If left untreated, gum disease can continue until the bone, and destroy other tooth-supporting tissues.
Scaling, root planing, & periodontal screenings
At Polished Dental Care, we assess the health of your gum tissue through periodontal charting, probing of the gum tissue, and X-rays to observe the supporting bone. If periodontal disease is present, we have the expertise to treat it. Often treatment requires a non-surgical procedure known as scaling and root planing. This “deep cleaning” removes harmful bacteria below your gum line and smooths the root surfaces to prevent further attachment of bone-destructing bacteria.
The importance of healthy gums cannot be emphasized enough. Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection of the gum and bone that holds the teeth into place. You may not be aware that you have a problem until your gums and the supporting bone are already damaged. That’s where we come in with periodontal screenings to assess your risk early.
We work with you to determine an appropriate interval of digital radiographs, a form of digital x-rays and cameras used to help accurately take diagnostic pictures of your teeth. Noninvasive and quick to produce images, digital radiographs help Polished Dental Care clearly see the oral structure of your teeth and gums.
Brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing regularly, and visiting the dentist twice a year are paramount for keeping your teeth healthy and strong. However, fluoride treatments play an integral role, too, helping to prevent cavities and tooth decay. Fluoride treatments come in two varieties: systemic and topical. Systemic fluoride is ingested, usually through a public water supply. Topical fluoride is generally delivered through toothpaste, mouthwash, or professional fluoride applications and can help strengthen teeth, making them decay-resistant.
Children’s dentistry & sealants
Dental sealants are thin plastic coatings applied to the chewing surface of teeth in the back of the mouth, providing extra protection against decay and helping prevent cavities. Most tooth decay in children and teens occurs in this area! Our highly skilled and empathetic team will make your child feel comfortable and at ease, as applying sealants does not require drilling or removing tooth structures.
Toothpaste and mouthwashes
Children and adults at high risk of dental decay may benefit from using additional fluoride products, including dietary supplements (for those who do not have adequate levels of fluoride in their drinking water), mouth rinses, and professionally applied gels and varnishes.
A sports guard is a necessity for anyone who plays a contact sport. Polished Dental Care can fabricate a custom sports guard in our office that will fit comfortably while offering superior protection for your mouth and teeth.
Occlusal guards (night guards)
A custom night guard costs less than restorative dentistry for those who grind or clench their teeth at night. Many patients who grind their teeth are often unaware they do it until it’s brought to their attention by a partner or a dental care provider after identifying the signs of teeth grinding, such as worn tooth enamel. An occlusal (night) guard is an oral appliance worn while sleeping to prevent teeth grinding (bruxism).
