What is dental tooth extraction?

A tooth extraction is a procedure used to remove a tooth that can no longer be repaired or is causing problems for your oral health.

When is a tooth extraction needed?

Whenever possible, Dr. Elizabeth White’s first choice is to save your natural tooth. She may need to recommend removing a tooth if you have:

    • Severe tooth decay that cannot be repaired
    • A tooth that is cracked or broken below the gumline
    • Advanced gum disease causing loose teeth
    • A serious dental infection
    • An impacted wisdom tooth
    • Overcrowding before orthodontic treatment
    • A tooth that has experienced significant trauma

Our primary goal isn’t simply to solve today’s problem. We want to protect your smile for years to come.

    The Tooth Extraction Procedure

Sometimes, the most intimidating part of getting a tooth removed is not knowing what to expect. To help put you at ease, here’s what typically happens during a dental extraction procedure:

    Step 1: Examination and Planning

If you are having trouble with a tooth, we will start with an examination. During the appointment, we will take X-rays and review your medical history. This helps us determine the best way to keep your smile healthy. If we find that an extraction is the best option for your smile, we’ll explain exactly why, answer all of your questions, and help you schedule the next step.

    Step 2: Keeping You Comfortable

When you arrive for the tooth pulling procedure*, we’ll first numb the area with local anesthesia so you don’t feel pain during treatment. If you’re feeling anxious, know you’re not alone. We can also discuss sedation options to help you feel more at ease.

*For emergency situations, we can do same-day tooth extractions.

    Step 3: Removing the Tooth

How the tooth is extracted depends on the situation. For teeth that are fully visible above the gums, we gently loosen the tooth before removing it. Our goal is to minimize discomfort while protecting the surrounding bone and tissue. Although you may feel pressure during treatment, the procedure itself should not be painful.

If the tooth is impacted or broken below the gumline, we will likely refer you to an oral surgeon instead of doing the procedure in our office.

    Step 4: Helping You Heal

Once the tooth has been removed, we’ll clean the exposed area, control any bleeding, and provide detailed aftercare instructions to help the extraction site heal properly.

    Types of Tooth Extractions

Not every extraction is the same. The type of procedure depends on the position and condition of your tooth.

    Simple Tooth Extraction

A simple extraction is done when the tooth is fully visible above the gums. After thoroughly numbing the area, the tooth is gently loosened and removed. This is the most common type of dental tooth extraction and is typically completed in a single visit.

    Surgical Tooth Extraction

A surgical extraction is used when a tooth hasn’t fully erupted (come through the gums), has broken below the gumline, or is impacted (stuck between other teeth). This procedure often requires a small incision to safely remove the tooth while preserving surrounding tissue. Since we don’t do surgical procedures at Polished Dental Care, we will refer you to an oral surgeon for this kind of extraction.

    Wisdom Tooth Extractions

Wisdom teeth don’t always cause problems. Some people never need to get them removed! But if your wisdom teeth become impacted, overcrowd your smile, or increase your risk of infection, it may be time to get them removed. (Don’t worry. You will still be just as wise.) This kind of extraction would also be done with an oral surgeon.

    Recovery After a Tooth Extraction

Healing after a tooth extraction is usually simple and straightforward, especially if you follow your aftercare instructions.

What to Expect After a Tooth Extraction

Most patients experience mild swelling and soreness for the first few days after the extraction. These symptoms gradually improve as the exposed area heals.

What Can You Eat After an Extraction?

You’ll want to stick to soft foods for the first day or two, such as:

    • Yogurt
    • Applesauce
    • Mashed potatoes
    • Soup (cooled slightly)
    • Scrambled eggs
    • Smoothies (without using a straw)

You’ll also want to avoid hard, crunchy, spicy, or sticky foods until the area has healed. It’s also important not to drink through a straw during the first few days to reduce the risk of dry socket, a painful dental condition that can sometimes happen after tooth extraction. As your mouth heals and you feel ready, you can gradually return to your normal diet.

How to Manage Discomfort After an Extraction

In your aftercare instructions, we will outline the best pain management options based on your treatment. We usually recommend taking over-the-counter pain medications as needed and applying an ice pack during the first 24 hours to help reduce swelling.

    How Long Does Healing Take?

After a regular extraction, most patients are able to return to their normal daily activities fairly quickly. On average, the gum tissue takes one to two weeks to heal while complete healing of the underlying bone takes a little longer.

    Follow-Up Care

During your initial consultation, we’ll let you know if a follow-up appointment will be needed. If your extracted tooth needs to be replaced, we’ll also discuss your restorative options including dental bridges or implants.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    What is tooth extraction?
Tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the jawbone. Dentists recommend extractions when a tooth cannot be repaired or when removing it will improve your overall oral health.
How much does a tooth extraction cost?
The cost of a dental extraction depends on the complexity of the procedure, whether the tooth is impacted, and your dental insurance coverage. Before treatment begins, we’ll review your recommended care, explain your options, and provide a personalized cost estimate so there are no surprises.
How long does a tooth extraction take?
Many simple extractions can be completed in about 20 to 40 minutes. Surgical extractions, which are done by an oral surgeon, may take longer depending on the complexity of the procedure.
What can I eat after a tooth extraction?
Choose soft foods for the first couple of days. You’ll want to avoid hard, crunchy, spicy, or sticky foods until the area has healed. It’s also important not to drink through a straw during the first few days to reduce the risk of dry socket.
    When is tooth extraction necessary?
A tooth extraction may be necessary when a tooth is severely damaged, infected, impacted, or too loose to save. Our first priority is always preserving your natural teeth whenever possible, but if an extraction is the healthiest option, we’ll guide you through every step with compassion and care.
    Does a tooth extraction hurt?
The procedure itself should not be painful because the area is thoroughly numbed beforehand. You may feel pressure during the procedure and experience some soreness afterward. We’ll provide recommendations to help keep you comfortable during recovery as well.
How long does it take to heal?
The initial healing typically takes one to two weeks. While the gums heal relatively quickly, the underlying bone continues healing over the following weeks and months. However, this isn’t a process patients generally feel or notice.
