Protect Your Winning Smile With the Right Sports Guard
Sports guards (or mouth guards) aren’t optional for athletes – they’re a necessity. Sports guards significantly reduce the rate of dental injuries for all those who play contact sports – kids and adults alike. For the most comfortable fit and best protection on the field, Dr. White at Polished Dental recommends choosing a custom-fitted guard.
Are you an athlete or have kids enrolled in contact sports? Don’t lace up without protecting your teeth. Call our office at (616) 698-6663 or visit us online to score your custom-fitted mouth guard today!

Benefits of Sports Guards
Sports guards help prevent dental injuries by absorbing impact to the face and mouth. According to the American Dental Association (ADA), sports guards decrease the risk of dental trauma by over 80%.
A properly fitted mouth guard will protect you from:
- Chipped, broken, or knocked-out teeth
- Soft tissue damage to the gums, lips and cheeks
- Serious injuries to the jaw and neck
- Damage to dental restorations, such as crowns and bridges
- Teeth grinding
Boil-And-Bite Guards Vs. Custom-Fitted
You may be wondering, “Why can’t I just purchase an off-the-shelf sports guard and boil it at home?” Many of us (Dr. Liz included!) grew up doing boil-and-bite guards at home. However, now we have the data to understand how much more effective a custom-fitted mouth guard is. Better fit translates to being worn more often and better protection from dental injuries during contact sports.

Feature |
Boil-and-Bite |
Custom-Fitted |
| Material | EVA (soft plastic that softens in hot water) | High-quality dental-grade thermoplastic |
| Fit | Molded at home, often loose or bulky | Created from a detailed mold of your mouth for a precise, snug fit |
| Durability | Wears thin and breaks down more quickly | Durable, designed for long-term use |
| Protection Level | Provides basic cushioning, may not handle heavy grinding | Custom thickness options for your grinding/clenching needs |
| Longevity | 6-12 months | 3-5+ years for adults, or yearly for children, based on your child’s growth |
It’s important to note, too, that a more comfortable fit often translates to children (and adults) being more likely to wear them during play.
How Quickly Can I Get a Custom Mouth Guard?
Most patients at Polished Dental are pleasantly surprised at how quick and simple the process is. Getting a custom-fitted mouth guard usually involves two short visits:
First Visit – Impression or Scan
Dr. White takes a mold or digital scan of your teeth. This only takes about 15 minutes. From there, we create your custom guard using high-quality dental materials formed over your exact dental impressions. At Polished Dental, we either create your mouth guard right here in the office, or send it to our lab.
Second Visit – Fitting
Once your guard is ready, we’ll give you a call to come in for your fitting. Dr. White will check the bite and make small adjustments so it feels comfortable and secure. This is just another quick 10–15 minute visit.
The total process takes just two weeks!
Caring for Your Sports Guard
Your mouth guard can last over 5 years if you remember to care for it properly! Dentist-fitted guards are made from very durable and long-lasting thermoplastic. It’s also very easy to keep them clean, so you can benefit from their protection for years.
To get the most life from your sports guard, it’s most important to rinse it after each use and keep it dry. But here are a few tips to help you level up your care game:
- Rinse after every use: Rinse your guard with cool water (never hot water!) right after you take it out of your mouth. This helps remove saliva and debris.
- Brush gently: Use a soft toothbrush and mild soap (not toothpaste, which can scratch the surface) to gently clean it a few times a week.
- Let it dry completely: Moisture leads to bacteria. Always let your guard air-dry completely before putting it back in its case.
- Use a ventilated case: Use the ventilated case that Dr. White provides, and never store it near heat (like in the cabinet above the kitchen stove!) or direct sunlight (on a windowsill).
- Bring it to checkups: Take your guard with you to dental appointments so your dentist can make sure it still fits properly. Keep an eye on any wear and tear, so you can mention it at your appointment.
With the right care, a custom sports guard can keep your smile safe for years.
